was naughty, and that Dave was a nice man. The film is given a PG certificate, but only because of a couple of moments of mild rude humour (a little farting if you must know). I was surprised this was given such a rating, and was thus unnecessarily prepared to block my son's ears or eyes should an unsuitable bit occur. This did not happen. I felt it could be considered a 'U' rating, but I guess I'm not an expert.
Cast and Performances
The character of Dave as the lead of the film (apart from the CGI animated chipmunks) was brilliantly cast. Jason Lee, a veteran actor of quirky comedic roles (most recently seen as the lead in 'My Name is Earl'), played the part perfectly, and he reminded me completely of the Dave I remember in the cartoon series. David Cross plays Ian Hawke, old college mate of Dave's and the aforementioned money-hungry music mogul/manager. The love interest is Claire, played by the beautiful Cameron Richardson. These three actors, along with the vocal talents of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney as Alvin, Simon and Theodore respectively, carry the film along without any real need for other acting involvement, and it is a testament to their wonderful characterisation of the parts that this is all that is needed for the film.
Director Tim Hill has a pedigree as the writer of SpongeBob SquarePants, and he transforms his TV magic onto the big screen here. SpongeBob is a favourite of my son's, so it's no surprise he enjoyed this film. It is a very simple film, with an uncomplicated plot and simple script, but then it's aimed at a younger audience (and secretly those of us who like a bit of nostalgia) so a more in-depth film would not have been appropriate.
My Opinion
If you are looking for a cinematic masterpiece, move along. If you want an easy-to-watch comedy film designed for kids (with parental guidance) and providing a no-fuss script that is easy to follow, then go no further. This is a lovely film, with all the right requirements. It lasts for roughly an hour and a half, about the right time for a kids' film. The chipmunks are done superbly, and Jason Lee does very well, especially considering most of the time he is acting with talking chipmunks that are put onto the screen afterwards! This is a very easy to watch film that the kids will love. It's probably not one I am likely to buy on DVD when it comes out, but I'm glad I've seen it and that my son has too. We had a right laugh, and I have no regrets. A recommended comedy. And, for those who are fans of the cartoon series, yes, you do get the tagline: 'AAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLVVVVVIIIIIII INNNNNNNNN!' in the film!
