The shortcut to becoming a Christian is to go to prison or into combat. Most people find religion real fast when the iron doors clang shut or the bullets start to fly.
You've probably heard that there are no atheists in foxholes. Recently some atheists have challenged that notion, even claiming to have maintained their lack of religion even in combat. I have yet to see proof of that claim.
Something about imminent danger makes Jesus a viable option. Just flip a car on the highway and see if Buddha is the first thing that comes to mind. However, short of dangerous situations there are really easier ways to join in on the Good Life.
The simplest way is to confess the Lord Jesus as your Savior, call upon Him and you shall be saved. Really, there's not much more required. But like everything else in life, you need a little more detail.
I could tell you that all you need to do to drive a car is turn the key and put it in gear.
Of course you need some instruction to be able to operate that car correctly. You need to learn the rules of the road; you want to learn how to read those warning signs to avoid making fatal mistakes. You need the driver's manual.
To become a Christian, you also need the manual. The guide book for the Christian life is the Bible, the word of God. In it you will encounter the record of Man's failure, the nature of your enemy and God's plan to bring you back into salvation and eternal fellowship with Himself.
Towards the back of the book you actually read the words spoken by this man Jesus while He walked on the Earth. You read the words he spoke into human ears as he lived, died and rose again from the dead.
There was a process; from the fall of Man in the Garden of Eden to the prophesies of the coming savior, to the fulfillment of that prophesy. Everything is laid out in the book. Quite daunting, I know. A novice can get overwhelmed and confused by so much information.
That is why you need fellowship with other Christians, and an instructor. Call him reverend, minister or pastor, that person has spent years learning his way through the bible and is ordained to preach the Living Word.
The final step to becoming a Christian is to take that Word and put it into your heart and let it grow your faith. You will come to know that the Truth of the Word is the Truth of Life. The Word was laid down before the foundations of the Earth. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The very same word you hold in your hand is still alive today.
A Christian tests all things against the Word of God, even the teachings of the pastor. If he is teaching something that is not supported by the bible, then find another preacher. Better to be cast out of an apostate church on Earth than to be cast out of the Book of life.
There is more; the leading of the Holy Spirit, the indwelling of the same. But that comes with more learning. But, if you've gotten this far you are well on the way to being a Christian.
Actually, if you started with the confession step, you were already a Christian then. But you needed to grow in the Christian life. Just as you had a lot to learn as a baby from the womb, the Christian also has more to learn from the moment of baptism. But be certain of the truth of this passage;
"Seek HIM with all your mind and all you heart and all your soul and you shall be made whole."
