Rating the 2008 American Idol contestants

As the American Idol show once again launches a new season it is with great enthusiasm that I methodically, strategically and systematically will calculate the 2008 winner. Certainly, odds will teeter each week as the contestants perform based on the selection of song, adaptation to their vocal capability, and support of the fans. But one thing is sure and certain; I will be a part of that voting system that nominates the talented hopeful toward victory. Proudly I have been tuned in since season one when Kelly Clarkson took home the first place title. Eagerly, I bought her debut album along with, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, and Jordin Sparks, the winners that followed each season. Weekly the usual soap opera talk around the lunch table at work was replaced with chatter about the new singing sensation. With each season I took the task of voting very seriously. I watched, listened, and took notes. Most importantly I voted. Quite simply, I was hooked from the get go.

To this day, I faithfully watch, vote, and speak of performances to all that will listen. Just like the presidential election, I rally everyone and speak of the importance of voting. My music taste has become rather eclectic. As a woman old enough to be any of the contestant's mother it seems amusing perhaps that I delight in this tad bit of television reality. When one considers that I was privy to be a part of the generation which watched "The Carol Burnett Show, "The Sonny & Cher Show," or even "The Lawrence Welke Show," it might stand to reason why there is an appeal to watching this modern day variety hour. Basically, it is a revolution. Individuals come together regardless of age, gender or ethnic background and enjoy a few hours of variety entertainment. That alone is worth rating the 2008 contestants.

So as the 2008 American Idol season is upon us and the final twelve begin their competition my rating will be based on a few concrete factors. First, I will measure if they can purely sing. Second, will the song they choose and their rendition move me? I consider comments made by the judges. Also, I note if they have a marketable quality. Do they have a good stage presence? Purposely, I treat the performances like a job interview. Would this artist be someone I would listen to while driving in my car, running a mile down the road, or even go to a concert to see? Of course, this really is all pretty casual because it is my personal opinion. But, what it comes down to is if I would give the singer my vote. Each week I pick my top three favorites and when Ryan Seacrest states, "It is time to vote America." I matter-of-factly pick up my phone, dial the designated numbers and listen for a busy signal or "Thanks you for voting..." With the exception of season two, in which I chose Clay Aiken, I have accurately selected the titleholder. Coincidence, chance or just pure luck? Maybe! But for me, along with the entertainment it is enough to tune in each year. And based on the number of callers, I don't think I stand-alone.
