How to teach math facts to elementary school students using a multi-sensory approach

Math Facts can be taught using a multi-sensory approach.a real stumbling block for children. Today, teachers will just move on, even if certain children haven't mastered math facts. You can

1) Demonstrate multiplication and division by using materials your child can handle and move around. Coins, poker chips, marbles, dry beans, anything that is small enough to handle easily and large enough to see clearly, can be used to demonstrate the concept that multiplication is repeated addition. Set these items up in sets to be sure your student understands the underlying concept. 3 x 7 = 21 is three sets of seven items or seven sets of three items. AND even 21 items divided into 3 sets means 7 will be in each set OR 21 items set off into 7 sets or groups will give you exactly 3 in each set.

2) Use index cards to create games such as a match game or "Concentration" for whatever math concepts you are trying to practice. Create a game together and play it together. To make it multi-sensory, involve the tactile senses by using paints that are raised up above the paper or card's surface.

3) Songs- Using rhyme schemes, familiar tunes, or a rap beat, students can learn math facts or equivalents such as 4 quarts = one gallon. Encourage them to share their creations with others or to actually teach them to others.

4) Use colorful markers and paper to "take apart" word problems. Make it visual. Show your child how to draw pictures, diagrams, tables, or any representation that can help him or her sort out the information in the problem. Draw lots of pictures- even stick figures, squiggles, boxes, arrows, question marks, .... any representations of what is actually being asked in the word problem. This strategy, once understood, can be used in later grades as a progression toward solving the problem mathematically. This comprehension element is critical to math success.

5)Combine flash cards with recitation aloud. You can also have the student trace the numbers and mathematical symbols as they are seeing and saying each part.

6)The more sensory the learning experience the better. Using magnetic numbers and symbols or even numbers on Post-It notes can enable a young student to engage other senses to improve memory and recall. This is particularly useful in number fact families so that students can see that 5x3= 3x5. In turn, 15 divided by 3 = 5.

One of the best ways to improve math skills is to have the child play teacher using any of the game pieces or manipulatives you may have. You can play the student and this role reversal is a great way to see what the student has learned. Make materials available to the student to involve the senses and include physical movement and rhythmic activities.
