Christianity was brought to be through the coming of the Son of Man, Jesus, and his death and resurrection. It soon became a big religion throughout much of Europe and the surrounding nations. Then there was Columbus who "sailed the ocean blue in 1492" and discovered the Americas. After that, there was much chaos and the catholic church split. Now there are Protestant Christians and Catholic Christians. Protestants were persecuted so most went to America to find religious freedom.
Much of the thirteen colonies were therefore Christian and this would come to influence much of the planning and founding of the US. God is mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, even the Pledge of Allegiance. Almost all of the US presidents were in some way Christian, too. The US was born trusting in God. The US offered freedom of religion to everyone especially those in Europe at the beginning, so it was already predominantly Christian. The US is still predominantly Christian today as well.
There also more factors that affect Christianity in the US. The US was built around many Christian morals and beliefs. The government and todays society include many laws and rules very similar to that of Christianity. If you live in the US then it is barely any different than living life as a Christian. Although there are a lot of things that can affect certain things, such as the media, being a Christian in America is easy. Be good and you're good. There is nothing to it, just devote a few hours each week (maybe less) and you look good. Many people see Christianity this way and think it is a "get out of jail free" card, which it can be at times, but you have to mean it. Because when you get that "get out of jail free" card you have to pass it on.
You don't have to, but it helps as a Christian to become a missionary. This is probably what scares people the most about the Christian religion, going somewhere (most likely a place you've never been to before) and meeting new people and trying to convert them. It is hard and sometimes even dangerous. This is probably one reason Christianity is declining in the US even though it is the leading religion. because people who are actually searching for a religion want something they like so they are pushed away. and some of those who are already Christians want to avoid something they don't like so their faith becomes weak. They stray away from Christianity and the stronger more faithful Christians leave to new counties as permanent
