The title of this debate should be; "Is it possible to communicate with negative people without them affecting your happiness, negatively."

Communication is always a two way street. An opportunity for exchange between people where you talk and listen to one another.
Communication is a time for giving and receiving advice, praise or encouragement.
Communication should always end positively or in a resolution of sorts.

If that is not possible, maybe you can agree to come back at a later date and continue your discussion later.
Communication with friends, is something to be enjoyed and looked forward.
The stuff that makes happy memories.
An important and healthy part of life.

Okay, so that is how happy, positive people communicate - hopefully.
Negative people just talk at you and whinge and complain.
You try to be positive and say helpful things but they just don't to hear happy thoughts.
They want to be unhappy.
The constant complaining and self-centeredness of negative people is a subtle and unhealthy way for them to gain attention.
Even if it is bad attention, it is better than no attention.
Think about what negative people always talk about?
They always talk about themselves and their problems.
They never ask about you and if you try to talk about your life, they somehow manage to twist the conversation back onto themselves.

As to the effect that their negativity has on your happiness.
Well firstly, the only positive effect that you will feel is that, you will be glad that you aren't them! That your life is a whole lot better than the sorry mess they keep whining on about.
But you will come away feeling drained and a bit useless that you weren't able to help bring any change or happiness to their day.
You will wonder why you bother to be friends with such a miserable person who seems incapable of changing their lives or enjoying themselves.
But, because you are happy, positive, kind and caring, you will return for more.
Because in your heart,you hope that someday, your sad and lonely friend will be happy and share their wonderful life with you.
