Running a business with only 3 people can be a bit tedious at times, but if done correctly, will save you quite a bit of money. There is something very personal and tight-knit about a business run by only three people.
First things first. Designate each person a task of their own. It will keep order within the business. If each person has their own job to do, it will minimize confusion and possible disagreements.
You already know you have 3 people, so start off easy. Break your "departments" into three categories.
1. Sales
2. Technical Support
3. Finance
Sales: This position could be outside sales, online or counter sales, and let's not forget telephone sales. Once you have found your man, put him to work generating business. Something to remember when assigning jobs or positions, is personality and knowledge of that field.
Sales for instance, requires a strong "go-getter" type of personality and let's not forget the "gift of gab", always a plus. This will be the heart of the operation.
Financial Department: You need to find someone who is quick with numbers, works well under pressure and has somewhat of a calm demeanor. Keeping your boat afloat will rely greatly on the skills of your financial manager. This is undoubtedly the brains of it the operation.
The Techie: This guy should be impeccably creative, knowledgeable in several areas of expertise and work well with others and clients. This is going to be the soul of your operation. He will need to be great with phone skills, computer literate, good with money and able to logically solve problems, sometimes two at a time.
These are your basic categories of any business. Now of course there are others but they can be divided up among the three of you as needed. The most important thing about running a successful business with so little help is teamwork. Sharing the load so that no particular person gets overwhelmed.
Make sure that each of you is rewarded by the other, whether it be verbal praises here and there or a surprise bonuses once in awhile. You do not want the people involved in business with you to start harboring resentment. Keeping it harmonious will make for a fabulous working environment and productive one too.
Hold weekly coffee meetings to sit and discuss ideas, concerns or feelings. Many problems have been discussed and resolved over a simple cup of Java. Remember one thing, every person is unique in their own way. Each will have something special to offer and each will handle stress differently. Being considerate of the different personalities will keep you sane through this journey.
