US elections 2008: Why Barack Obama epitomizes the American dream

WHY BARACK OBAMA MUST WIN

America has lost its way, both domestically and internationally. To restore hope, as Senator Obama constantly reminds us, drastic change is required. Fortunately, drastic means are not necessary in that Barack Obama is a poised, logical, inspirational candidate whose very presence in the race demonstrates that he does not shy away from a challenge and is able to overcome apparently insurmountable obstacles at a very high level - the highest, in fact.

Tom Brokaw describes Obama as having the most charisma of any candidate he can recall since Bobby Kennedy, who until his untimely death showed the same ability to unite diverse groups within the country at a time when the nation was up in arms at home and abroad during the Vietnam War.

Whether Obama will be able to accomplish all of the goals he has set for himself and his campaign in one term remains to be seen; what we do know is that he will do everything humanly possible to achieve the changes that he proposes and what we can hope is that once elected he is given a second term to finish the job.

THE UNITED STATES IS ADRIFT INTERNATIONALLY

The myriad problems cannot be described in any appreciable detail in any article of reasonable length; there are several excellent books written by Pulitzer Prize winning authors that achieve this after lengthy research and work on the part of the author. But, the key points can be addressed:

- The "War on Terror" is in the wrong country: The US had the world on its side when we moved into Afghanistan after 9-11; when we left the capture of Bin Laden to the Pakistanis, as many or more who support Bin Laden in the first place, we abandoned our stated goals.

- Iraq is a quagmire on a good day with no ties to Weapons of Mass Destruction ("WMD's") and no ties to Al Qaeda, until the US invaded Iraq leading other terrorist groups, Hezbollah and Hamas, to then unite with Al Qaeda.

- The overtures with conflict with Iran portend more disaster and chaos, involving a US military that is stretched to the breaking point, with a compulsory draft the next likely event if change is not effected soon.

- The conflicts to establish US bases in the Middle East have done nothing to improve the energy situation as gas prices steadily move towards $4 a gallon, despite President Bush being fully unaware of the situation; the US presence in Iraq gives more young Arab men the inspiration to join radical fundamentalists and increases, rather than reduces, the prospects for additional
