The adult student is in the sometimes maddening situation of having a good deal more discipline and resources at his or her disposal, but also having much more responsibility than the average 18-20 year old who is entering university for the first time. But, as a 40-something working mother and wife engaged in many personal and professional extra-curricular activities, I find my classroom time to be particularly exhilarating because of the accumulated knowledge and experience I am able to apply and to share with other students.
Whether education goals are related to getting a promotion, preparing for international travel, launching your own business, or satisfying constant curiosity, the adult learner is at a unique time in history where "want to do" and "have to do" are not mutually exclusive, but complementary.
The Internet, of course, provides countless online learning opportunities through accredited universities and colleges. Within those institutions, one can piece together their degree or certificate by using knowledge and experience in the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), course challenges, and accelerated programs.
With CLEP, you awarded university credit by completing an examination in a subject after independent study. Course challenges allow you to "test out" of a class by examination as well. In this case, the instructor provides the student with a syllabus and a timeline by which study must be completed.
Accelerated programs are tailored to the adult learner who wishes to complete a degree for which they have already obtained university credit. In the accelerated program, the student works closely with an advisor to determine how much of their professional work experience, vocational training, independent study, creative and professional accomplishments, and even extraordinary life experiences can be converted to university credit. These programs are usually completed through a combination of on-site and online course attendance.
Make sure you are clear about the policies and timelines of your institution. Some courses cannot be challenged or completed through CLEP. In most cases, you will be charged the full tuition amount for credit received through CLEP and course challenge.
As an adult learner, you may be paying college tuition for children of your own. This is a financial burden that is increasing rapidly, and with complexity, not unlike the health care situation which is now at a crisis level. This is where the adult learner has some advantages in very practical ways, as the working adult often has access to tuition reimbursement through an employer or can teach in his or her area of expertise for additional funds or tuition reduction. Employees of colleges and universities often have free tuition as a benefit that extends to dependents.
Learn how to learn. Some of the best learning comes from teaching others, and the adult learner makes an excellent teacher. Finding ways to overcome logistical or financial obstacles is an education itself one that pays for itself with increasing creativity, self-esteem, and determination.
