Is organic worth the price?

Organic food is a good reason for debate. It is a relatively new concept for me, but when I completely understood what it means, I became an enthusiastic of it. I'll begin by saying that organic food has its standards to be considered like that, for example, in the case of vegetables, they must be grown without pesticides, fertilizers or human waste and processed without radiation or additives; in the case of animal they must be raised without antibiotics or hormones and fed with organic crops. That was the way in which the food was produced in the old times, but when the demand began to grow new methods developed that increased the offer of food but using artificial and sometimes dangerous components.

But there is something that can keep us away from organic food. Since there is more demand than offer, organic products are more expensive than conventional ones and that could be a problem for some people to buy them ( in fact , that's a problem for me). So, we really have to be convinced that it is really worthy to acquire such food.

Having said that, what can we really win by buying organic? Let's start with the fact that everywhere you hear that there is no evidence that organic food is healthier than conventional, but when you really apply logic to all this, you have to conclude that it has to be healthier since they don't have all of those additives, chemicals and poisons. Let's think about what they give to the "non organic" animals, all those hormones, medicines and artificial food they take, they are passing that to us when we eat them , so we really have to consider what we are eating.

But, apart from speculations, the experts have really found that there are more concentration of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in organic plants since they are picked at the right time and not before, also artificial fertilizers cause a growth in vegetables based on water and not in nutrients. Organic products rely on their own defenses to be protected from bugs, that's why they have more antioxidants than conventional ones.

The presence and consequent consumption by persons of pesticides have been related to several alterations such as neurological symptoms, indigestion, even with breast cancer and problems in kids (decreased motor abilities and aggressive behavior). Some studies have found that people eating organic food have fewer incidences of common diseases like colds.

I really think we have to keep getting information about this kind of food, but definitely it is worthy, it gives us a healthier alternative to conventional products and that is something more valuable than money.
