Unlike the home, a business address employs many people and uses resources that may not be friendly for the environment. No matter how old the building, how many people the business employs and how many lights, paper and electrical items are used, incorporating some of the below tips will ensure your business is more eco-friendly.
Some businesses have the ability to start afresh and may have the funds to do many of the below things. But even if the building is leased, there are many more ways to ensure your business is doing its bit for the environment.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
If your business is currently looking for new electrical items such as computers or photocopiers, try and purchase those that claim to be eco friendly.
Have a look at the items that exist within the building such as the toilets and taps that are in the bathrooms. Have eco-friendly toilets installed that allow for the dual flush. You may also want to look at the taps and replace them with timer friendly taps.
Look at the white goods in your kitchen and ensure the dishwasher, water thermos and other items staff use have timers and water saving features installed.
Have a plumber come in and check all fixtures to ensure there are no drips and all taps run efficiently.
RECYCLING PAPER
In this age of amazing computer technology, many businesses are still in the habit of having a lot of paper used within their business.
Always ensure there are recycle bins placed next to photocopiers and desks so that used paper can be recycled. Paper that may have only been printed on one side may also be used for scrap writing and used again for office notices.
Have a look at trying to eliminate the amount of paper used in the office. Contact your IT person and look at having business procedures and important guides made into email or intranet form. An intranet is an internal system that the company uses for staff to gain information from.
Your kitchen should also have a recycling bin provided so that staff can throw away empty food boxes or plastic milk jugs when finished.
BATHROOMS
Staff doesn't need to have high quality 3-ply toilet paper, try and purchase paper without design patterns or those that are 2-ply. You could look at recycled toilet paper as well but the quality isn't as good as other paper.
Install taps that have timers, such as push buttons that allow the water to cut out after a specific time.
Install eco-friendly toilets that allow two buttons, one for half water and one for full water flush.
