Should teenagers be able to own credit cards? Ive read quite a few comments from people who are for and against the idea, however being a student, and having a credit card I feel im in a place were I could make a personal opinion about the subject, with my own experiences. Im totally for teenagers being given credit cards, however not all credit cards should be given. In England, I find the most people applying for a credit card must first meet some of the basic requirements, i.e. a good credit background, a regular means of income, and the ability to pay back the debt, either in full of through a minimum payment option.

Ive applied for credit cards, from many of the top lenders, and being a student always get rejected, even though I have a steady income and a good credit score, I guess this is because the idea of being a young adult, means backs so us as a liability, and unprofitable source of revenue, however there are a few lenders that I have had success with, and I currently own a student credit card.

The student credit card has the same perks as a normal credit card, in the sense that you can borrow money up to a limit of 2000, with no interest on purchases for say 6 months. The service is especially designed to cater for the younger generation, yet also ensuring they are being treated fairly and that the financial repayments are affordable, unlike most high street banks that unfairly charge excess amount.

For me giving teenagers a credit card can be seen as a learning curve, it teaches us the importance of fiscal planning, what the real world expects from us. It tough me to be careful with each months pay check, insuring that I had enough money to pay off my monthly balance. Financial planning and management, is one of the key responsibilities for a teenager, it enables them to grow, learn and decide from themselves.

My main reasons for obtaining a credit card were simple; I had recently past my driving test, and wanted to by a new car. My parents were willing to pay for the car, if I contributed towards the cost of petrol. However, I saw buying my own car as a sanction of independence, it was a stepping stone for me, and a brilliant experience, however although I only started my new jobs, I didn't have enough money in my current account, and could only go 200 overdrawn. Being disheartened by the fact that I couldn't afford a short term sum for this car, I decided to shop around to see if anyone was willing to give me a credit card, so I
