"How to make a great sandwich"
There is only one way to make a great' sandwich.
The ingredients don't really matter.
Some like peanut butter and honey for others its cheese and bologna.
I crushed potato chips on potato salad sandwiched between two slices of rye.
I make a spaghetti sandwich piled on garlic bread. There's the left over meatloaf sandwich, with a slice of onion then slathered with mayo on toast.
Salami and cheese on a French bread,
Butter slathered between two slices of fresh baked bread.
The tomato, green pepper, onions, mushrooms grilled with olive oil and fresh basil.
Rye bread, French bread, herb and cheese toasted, or not.
Mayonnaise, butter, olive oil or any type of sauce or cream even plain always scrumptious; never dry or bland.
Tiny cucumber sandwiches, chicken, Italian beef with hot peppers.
My favorite is a hot Reuben, with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing, grilled in an iron skillet.
The best way to make a great sandwich is with a friend; chattering as the ingredients are arranged and centered just right. Where the thought that goes into the making becomes the best part of the sandwich.
When the eating is shared with laughter and joy the meal is gratis.
Have you ever watched a three year old make a sandwich? They concentrate so hard trying to make it perfect. Their pride with that accomplishment makes you smile. That smile can carry you through the task of cleaning up the fingerprint mess as it trails around the kitchen, onto the table, then over and under the chairs.
Still the memories of those great sandwiches linger, years later. Was it the peanut butter and jelly, which brings a glow of happiness? Or was it the furred face, waggling tongue dog you shared your cheeseburger with. Maybe it was a green eyed cat that devoured your tuna salad? Afterwards she nibbled on your slice of cantaloupe.
Did you have a quiet moment with a child, a grandparent, cat or dog? Was your friend, smiling while you ate, or stealing the pickle from you plate?
The best way to make a great sandwich is with laughter. Memories always make the food taste so much better.
