Musician reviews: Rob Tyre

by John Hoty

Created on: March 09, 2008

Having spent the last 7 years on St. Pete Beach, Florida as an admirer of all the great local musicians and minstrel gigolos of the area, I can honestly attest that the greatest live performer I have ever seen - either on a vast concert venue or of any private affair - is the undiscovered guitar genius, ROB TYRE. Considering all the stages and all the avenues for live music in this popular beach town, it is no wonder that Mr. Tyre stands at the forefront of performers who transcend the expectations of live shows and all their possibilities. Ask anyone who has ever been privileged enough to experience one of Rob Tyre's acoustic displays to describe the sheer power of his music and exhibition and you will find yourself subject to a deep longing for an entirely new breed of music you had only dreamed of ever hearing.

"The world is missing out on some great music," is how Grammy winner James Taylor has surmised Tyre's playing. Having opened for the musical legend here in Tampa, FL (as well as for the Doobie Brothers) and single-handedly managed Taylor's back-up singer Valerie Carter's recent forays into the the solo musical world, you begin to wonder - what can this musical wunderkind do on his own? Unfortunately Rob Tyre's songs and music are an untapped resource thus far, but totally available to anyone subscribing to Myspace or frequenting his haunts in the surrounding St. Petersburg areas. This is a performer so invested in his music, so possessed by the songs and artists he recreates and honors that you'll be transfixed where you stand as you absorb the raw power of his depictions. (If you get the chance to hear him live, be sure to request Springsteen's "Atlantic City" - I guarantee you have never heard it quite like this; quite this loud; quite this clear; quite this damn good!) ..And to uncover ANY of his original work is a journey into a world of pop music you never knew existed - piercing, emotional, hypnotic messages that deliver sonorous themes of love, loss, longing and lucidity as you've never heard them before. Here is that rare musician who dares to challenge the boundaries of contemporary song. Here is the man who not only presents that challenge, but offers a bullet-proof response to his submissions...

Venture into the world of ROB TYRE - search for him on Myspace or hunt him down online at his website www.tyrekingdom.com - and find yourself being swept into reveries of catchy pop ditties, hauntingly possessive ballads, or the signature song of
