He opens his eyes
once again to harsh sunlight
another day in these dreary surroundings
he dresses after the usual
tasteless breakfast
and a brief perusal of the paper
the news, as usual, is bad
he heads out to his car
avoiding a glance at his
unkempt lawn
on the drive to work
he fantasizes the day's end
back to bed
his work day is dull and uneventful
home again
he drags himself through the door
seeing the vague shapes
of his shabby furniture
for a moment he considers
not even turning on the lights
he might just drift through
the darkness of his home
and fall into bed fully clothed
he might just stay there awhile
She wakes to a sudden cold shock
her dog's wet nose
a good morning kiss
she watches the news
as she eats a warm breakfast
sharing sausage with her pet
the news, as usual, is bad
she contemplates how lucky she is
so much pain in the world
she pulls on a comfortable sweater
chilly today
in the car she chooses a new cd
nothing like great music
to get her going in the morning
work is crazy as always
but she feels a sense of accomplishment
at the day's end
home again
she turns on a lamp
and lets out a sigh
her own small comfy space
she kicks back with the dog
curled up on her lap
and clicks on the television
her favorite show is on
she giggles to herself
thinking surely there is something
more productive to do
but she's happy where she is
and she might just stay awhile

A Yearning
Even small as a sparrow
would I be,
if I could fly above the world,
soaring free.
No more than a ripple
would I be,
if
~~ To Fly Away ~~
To fly away and feel free
Only to fly - flying only me
How it would feel -only to love
To fly - soaring like
Freedom shall forever rest,
upon the shoulders of those who
unfailingly meet the test,
and with the gift of a year or two
spent
