My life has always been filled with passion. I'm passionate about almost every thing I do, but finding my true passion-what makes me truly happy took some time and quite a few years to realize it.
My ninth grade English teacher had told me I had a gift, but I didn't think I wrote any better or as good as the rest of the class. Oh, sure, I had a journal and wrote poems about my boyfriend, but when it came to showing my work to others, I didn't think it was good enough. My writing was only for me, a place to go when I needed comfort and solace. It wasn't until I was in college that I discovered how much I loved to write and started to show my work to others. Unfortunately, my major was in Business Administration and I had very little time to write. And when I entered the working world, my writing took a back seat to everything else in my life. It wasn't until years later that this nagging feeling that something wasn't quite right lead me to my dreams.
So now, nearing fifty, I write every chance I get. Even if it's not for publication or anyone else's eyes but mine. Several years ago, without planning or even thinking about it, I started to write a book. It started out as a short story that I was fiddling around with, but as I got into it and the characters, I realized I had to keep going. The nagging feeling was replaced with a burning desire that just couldn't be quenched, and the more I wrote, the desire became so clear. I was doing exactly what I was meant to be doing...writing. This story opened the floodgates and I've been writing ever since. You see, the passion was always there...just buried under a mountain of self-doubt. I let everything else get in the way because I didn't believe in myself. Let go of the doubt, clear your mind, find the stillness in your heart and you will hear it...the steady beat of the passion that will drive you to do whatever you want and whatever you were meant to do.
Don't let others discourage you. If I listened to everyone who said, "You can't make it as a writer, it's too hard." I never would have pursued my dream and have two books published. Now, I'm not rich by any means and I still have my day job, but I write whenever I can and sometimes it's hard to stop the words from flowing. I found my passion and nothing can keep me from it. It's who I am.
Listen to your heart. Only you know what's in it and what's right for you. Sometimes just slowing down and digging deep and clearing the clutter from your life, will help you find
