Making the transition from college to the world of work

When we are in high school most of us are taught that having a college degree will guarantee us success in the future. While this may be true for some, the journey is not as easy as we are told. Making the transition from college to the world of work requires more skill then simply signing up for courses and going to class. The real world can be far more frightening and unforgiving then college life. Before you set sail to the real world there are a few things you should consider. Perhaps learning from someone else's mistakes will help make your path much easier.

1.Start Early

Don't wait until graduation is over before you start planning your future. The real world doesn't start the summer after you graduate, it begins even before you get that diploma in your hand. If you prepare early you will understand the job market and hopefully make some much needed contacts. Also if you get really lucky you might be able to secure a job even before you graduate. As the old saying goes, "the early bird gets the worm". There are thousands of other college graduates looking for jobs after graduation, start early and get the job before they even start looking.

2.If your school offers job placement use it.

I used to think my universities job placement center was a joke. Sadly the joke was on me. Once I graduated all the good jobs were gone and I wished I would have used the resources available to me. Job placement centers at universities have more resources then you can imagine. They have detailed databases and job postings that can help guide you. Also, the staff make a living helping students find jobs. If they weren't successful, there wouldn't be a placement center. Use the free resources available to you before it's too late. These services are not free in the real world.

3.Get an internship, job or understudy someone in your future line of work.

This is good for many reasons. Not only can you network and get great experience, you can decide if this particular aspect of your major is right for you. Internships can be a blessing or a disaster. Either way, they teach you something. My internship taught me that I absolutely hated the line of work I thought I would love. I was able to switch gears fast enough to be in real trouble. Imagine if I would have waited until after graduation to discover this, I would have done all that work for nothing. At the least you will feel secure in your choice and have some great references for your first interviews.
