Since the beginning of time society as been puzzled by the age old question: Is it better to be intelligent or good-looking? This question is especially debatable in the younger generations who feel the constant pressure to fit in and be a part of the in crowd. Although both choices have their pros and cons, in the end there is one that will have a positive impact on the world and even the lives of the individuals.
Even though it is all fine and dandy to be beautiful, in the long run intelligence is more beneficial to everyone. No matter what your profession, if you do not have a well rounded intellect, life will be difficult for you. And imagine, the impact, not only on the individuals but on the world, if this choice as to which virtue is more valuable is made incorrectly. Imagine if world leaders, while being very attractive, were intellectually brain dead. The world would be in utter chaos.
Yet, as clear as the better and more responsible choice may be, why is it that the world is still heading down that track of valuing looks over brains? Why is it that the world is still on that track to doom and ultimate downfall? The world will never have a successful future if we continue teaching our children that beauty beats brains every time, hands down. Children need to be taught to embrace whoever they are and not to strive to be something else they can not. They need to know that they can all give a contribution to the world that is of some scholarly value.
Though it is not wise to say that everyone can be smart, it is also unwise to say that if a person is born stupid they will always be stupid. Although someone may not be the smartest person, they can make up for that with their drive and ambition to amount to something more. They need to know that they do not have this predestined role or worth created by society. People can stick to these roles and let their looks or intelligence rule their lives, or they can stand up and fight for the part they want to play.
So when it comes down to it, is the choice really that hard of one to make? Do we really need help to understand what is more valuable in life? Is there really any point in asking which is better: smart or pretty?
