Abercrombie Co. was first founded on 4th June 1982 by David T. Abercrombie, a small waterfront shop owner. However the name, Abercrombie & Fitch, did not become officially renamed until 1904 as Ezra Fitch, a regular customer, became a major shareholder of the company. However due to internal conflicts, David sold all of his shares to Fitch in 1907.
The clothing store company became the first store in New York to supply women clothing as well as men in 1910 with interior design that volumises outdoor feeling which was accompanied with outdoor goods and campfire. The sales feedback sky rocketed and many franchise stores were opened in USA.
Following the retirement of the co-founder, Fitch, the company began to financially struggle despite the bought over by Oshman, a sports goods retailer, in 1977. In 1988, Limited Brands bought over the almost dying company.
Targeting the teenage consumers, Michael S. Jeffries successfully re-established the company as a clothing brand. With apparels ranging from woven shirts, denim, miniskirts, cargo shorts, wool sweaters, polo shirts, and t-shirts, the concept became very popular and the sales once again increased tremendously.
With the great market response, Abercrombie & Fitch introduce a few new brands to the world. Targeting the age group of seven to fourteen years old, the brand, Abercrombie, was introduced in 1998.
In July 2000, the third brand of Abercrombie & Fitch was made. Targeting teenagers of fourteen to eighteen, Hollister Co, winds around the concept of a preppy California surfing image.
After the success with the third brand, RUEHL No.925, was introduced to the world on 6th September 2004. This new concept differs from its siblings as it targeted to post-college individuals from the twenties to the early thirties. A lot of time and dedication was poured into this revelling and was rewarded with a huge success.
With company revenue reports of USD$2.021 Billion in 2005, it was not surprising when the company branches out to other countries. With the new stores established in Canada, the end of the year income for 2006 for Abercrombie & Fitch experienced increase revenue of USD$1.297 Billion.
However the success of Abercrombie & Fitch does not end there. They have also expanded their wares to London, a formidable place teeming with well esteem brands. With its simple and yet almost urban theme, it is not surprising if Abercrombie & Fitch manage to reap a huge revenue again in their empire.
