How do we get God's attention

Are we looking for God's attention or are we looking for our own self-worth and esteem? When we find ourselves calling out for God, imploring him to help, or to save us, it is usually a sign that have had enough of the life we are currently living. This is our time of greatest blessing, if we turn our thoughts to giving God more attention.

You had God's attention from the first moment of creation. His focus on you gave you breath. His creative expression gave you life. God is in and around you always. In fact, if you can dig deep enough within your soul, you will find that God is your expression, and you are God's. They are the same. I read the following statement during a very rough time in my life. "I am God being me."

My first thought on this was, "How conceited can you get?" The concept was foreign to me. God was my creator, my conscience, my guide. I had learned to worship him as above me. How could I believe this new notion? So, in my open-minded way, I played with the concept for a few weeks, striving to see truth in those words. In meditation it came to me that if in fact God is omnipresent, in all things, at all times; if in truth I am a creation of God, as an extension of Spirit, then indeed I am "God being me". We all are.

If you could bring yourself to believe that statement, what would change in your life? If you could look at others and see God within, how would you react in a different way toward them?

When at first you begin to believe, you will find your thoughts less on you, and more on the world around you. Judgment of others turns to compassion. The question becomes, "How can I serve?" rather than "Can you not help me?" The need for attention becomes a desire to give attention. "How would God want me to handle this situation?" takes place of the once shattered and irrational thought of "How could this happen to me?"

When we nurture our needs, take care of our health, plan our lives in ways that serve a greater good, we feel that God is paying more attention. That feeling comes from within. It is our conscience affirming that what we are doing is for the highest good of all concerned. When we feel deserted, betrayed, angry and alone, God is still paying attention, but we cannot sense the presence of His love.

Take time each day to be grateful for God's blessings. They show up in a multitude of ways, sometimes disguised as challenges, pain and sorrow, but more often as a breathtaking sunrise, a rainbow, the smile of a friend, beautiful music, or a penny on the ground. Be thankful for air to breathe, the intricacies of how your body functions, the opportunity to recreate your life, the chance to be strong, to help, to cherish. God created us in His own likeness. Therefore, how can one believe that we even need his attention?

Give attention now to the love you are giving, the peace you are celebrating, and the life that God created for you, so that you could be One with all that He created. You are God being you, so if you need more attention, take time to be with yourself. Give yourself the attention you need. Hug yourself, and say in the mirror, "I love you", until you can feel the presence of love surround you always, without looking for external approval. Give others the attention you think you need, and your need for attention will disappear. God is paying attention. Are you?
