Travel destinations: Western Australia

There is no doubt that Western Australia has to be Australia's best kept secret - a huge, sparsely populated state that the majority of overseas visitors to Oz (and a lot of native Australians) never get a glimpse of. This is a shame because some of the most spectacular sights in the whole country are located within its borders. If you do get as far as Western Australia be sure not to miss the following attractions.

Perth. Famous for being the most remote state capital in the world, it's somewhat of a shock to discover that Perth is just as lively, interesting and cosmopolitan as most other big cities, with world-class night-life, shops and restaurants. It's also prettier, cleaner, and better laid out than most big cities. Don't miss surfing at Scarborough Beach, tranquil King's Park, and the bustling old port of Fremantle.

Rottnest Island. It's a short boat trip from Perth to the peace and tranquility of Rottnest Island. No public vehicles are allowed on the island and the best ways to enjoy its nature, wilderness, sandy shoreline and peace and quiet is by hiking or biking around the island. You'll also have the unusual experience of meeting quokkas - a unique breed of marsupials that make Rottnest their home.

The Pinnacles desert. This is a remarkable sight north of Perth where thousands of limestone pillars rise up to four meters high out of a smooth sandy desert floor. See it first thing in the morning under a clear blue sky for the most spectacular effect.

Kalbarri Gorges. A range of beautiful gorges and rock formations with great hiking trails and camping spots, and some of the best sunsets in the world.

Monkey Mia. In the heart of the world heritage site of Shark Bay, this is a fantastic spot. Wild dolphins swim in to the shore for a daily feed from the rangers. Unlike other wild dolphin experiences you can stand thigh deep in calm, warm water just a few steps from a sandy beach whilst dolphins circle around you.

Coral Bay. Go scuba diving or snorkeling in warm seas teeming with unusual marine life. It's possible to spot turtles, rays and dugongs in this area and the Exmouth pier is said to be one of the best dive sights in the world.

The Ningaloo reef. Not as well known as the Great Barrier but just as impressive. This is a great spot for diving, snorkeling and glass bottomed boat tours. It's also possible, at certain times of the year, to swim with migrating whale sharks. This is not as frightening as it sounds. These gentle
