open, fidgeting as if he hadn't studied at all and was attempting to cram everything in within the next fifteen minutes. I put the three page tests on my desk and puffed up with pride while looking at their sweet, anxious faces. I just knew they would do well on the test.
As I started to pass the tests out half of the class looked as if they were going to throw up. It took me back to my test days and I was thankful that I was no longer on the receiving end of the test. As soon as the last test was handed out, I simply told them to start. They sniffed the new paper (yes, they really do that) and proceeded to answer the multiple choice questions.
A little while into the test, "Freckles" raised his hand. "Here we go", I thought smugly as I made my way over to where he sat, propped up on his skinny knees. After whispering in my ear, I turned around to face the class and abruptly had them pass their test in right away. I had a room full of confused, students looking at each other as if God himself had rescued them from disaster. It was a disaster; for me. Sweet, little "Freckles" had brought to my attention that the answers were printed in the margin on the test. When I investigated, I noticed I had copied the teacher's answer key instead of the students' copy of the test! I took five or six papers at a time, cut the margins off each test, and redistributed each one; they looked like a first grader had cut them.
You can bet that that never happened again, however, plenty of other little mishaps took its place and I learned from all of them! As for "Freckles", maybe he's a lab assistant to a Science professor at some college.
