water. If you haven't exercised regularly since before your kids were born, you should start slowly. Keep track of your heart rate; you probably should not exceed twenty minutes of any exercise that raises your heart rate past eighty-five percent of the maximum your doctor sets.
I know: you see the jocks both men and women all around you, and some of them are putting on seeming world-class performances. But remember that these people spend hours in the gym and sometimes hours more on the road. You're not there, and you're not going out for competition as some of them are.
Are you going to lose thirty pounds? Good, but let's get something straight. This exercise thing you've just started has to go on, ideally, for the rest of your life. Why? So you can have a life, mostly.
The better your fitness, the more likely you are to arrive at your goal weight without major upheavals in your life. Your fitness, no matter how good it is, requires consistent activity to maintain it (your car to the garage, your body to the gym). What are some fitness goals that might work for you?
Important Life Activities for Everyone
Do you want to play with your kids and grandkids, but you're winded after only a couple of minutes? Regular exercise can fix that problem, and your whole family will notice the change in you.
Are you a golfer? Remember that golf is starting and stopping, starting and stopping. Your fitness level will rise if you walk greater distances as you acclimate. You might add swimming into the mix, too, especially if your knees are a little tender. Your golfing partners won't have to wait so much for you to catch up.
What's that? You say you're a younger person? Talk to that doctor, and get out there with walking, swimming, bicycling, and anything else that raises your heart rate appropriately. The word from the American Medical Association is that fit people may live longer, but they certainly will enjoy other benefits, too. Quality of life is very important, old or young.
Are you ready to take control of your life and future? Greater fitness and healthy weight goals may be just the tools you need.
