Why should the world care about the environment in places like Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Rwanda?

local fishing industry. John Stuart Mill said, "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decay and degradation, are worse."

In Zimbabwe the environment is facing many challenges: deforestation, poaching and the exploitation of resources. The locals are starving-eight years ago their president urged the locals to seize the farmland owned by whites. Shortly after that he turned his political oppression against his own people. Staggering inflation and mass emigration has lead to severe food shortages. Tens of thousands of snares and traps are set daily. Gangs with high-caliber weapons comb the area killing and selling buffalo, impala, and even elephant meat. The countryside is littered with carrion-dead rhinos stripped of their horns are left to rot under the African sun.

One of the last remaining pristine wilderness areas is located in Zimbabwe. Each year scores of tourist come to see experience nature but now poaching activities are threatening the tourist revenue. In a poverty stricken country-the natives are desperate for food. Their actions are understandable-who has the time or the mentality to be an environmentalist when your children are starving? All the same what is happening in Zimbabwe-mirrors what happened in Gorongosa National Park and the Gishwati Mountains. Mother Africa is crying out. One by one her resources, wildlife, even her soil continue to be drained and depleted.
