one.
Congratulations! You have just knitted your first row. Now change hands and put the needle containing the stitches into your left hand and the empty one in your right hand.
Repeat the process of working the stitches on the left-hand needle over to the right-hand one. The rows will keep building one on top of the other and your knitting will grow until you decide it's time to bind (cast) off.
GETTING THE YARN OFF THE NEEDLES, OR CASTING (BINDING) OFF
Knit the first two stitches of a new row and then stop. With the tip of the left-hand needle, lift the back stitch of the two on the right-hand needle over the front one and off the end of the needle.
Knit another stitch from the left-hand needle on to the right-hand one and repeat the process of lifting the back stitch over the front one on the right-hand needle. Continue this process until you come to the last stitch of your work. Break the yarn and thread it through the last stitch. Gently tighten the yarn to secure your work.
To start with you may find that your stitches do not all look the same size. However, once you are knitting more confidently your tension (the size of your stitches) will even out and the finished work will look more professional.
Once you have learned these basics, you can look forward to years of knitting pleasure.
