To be successful in small business, you need to be innovative. You need to have something that sets you and your product or service apart from your competition. In addition, you need to utilize every asset that you have at your disposal, and be flexible enough to truly meet your customers' needs. Here are four simple but effective tips that can help make your small business a success:
* Offer something different. Your product or service needs to be able to stand out to your potential customers. Ask yourself: "How it is my product or service different from anyone else's product or service? What am I doing that is innovative ?" Identifying what it is about your business that is unique and demonstrated that uniqueness to your potential customers will set you above the competition.
* Develop a cheering section from your existing client base. Do you have a client that you've done work for a repeat basis? Ask that client to write a review of your small business, or of your product or service. Ask for his or her permission to publicize their review. If that client has a web site, ask him or her to publish that review on their web site, as well. Ask that client to pass along his story to his or her associates, customers, vendors, and other sorts of business contacts. Word of mouth is the oldest form of marketing for the small business, and you should be certain you are using it to your advantage.
* Demonstrate in your ability to deliver your product or service on time and with superb quality. Prove that your product or service is a valuable to your customers, and that it is only your unique expertise that can meet their need. If you need to delay a product for quality's sake, do so. Follow the lead of software giant Blizzard Entertainment, the company that produces World of Warcraft and other PC games. Blizzard has, in the past, delayed products as many as two years to ensure that the product works the way that their customers want the product to work. Is Blizzard typically first-to-market? Nope. But Blizzard's products are, arguably, almost always better than the product that IS first-to-market.
* Look for opportunities in unexpected places. Be ready to expand your own repertoire so that you can meet other needs that your customers may have. Listening to your customers and finding out what other products or services they might be interested in can open up vast new markets and new areas of profitability for your small business. If you are a web content writer, for example, don't be afraid to expand into article writing, blogging or even print publication.
While doing these things alone doesn't guarantee your success in small business, they can help maximize the potential for your success.
