In Mt 24:41, the Word of God tells us that Hell was created for the devil and his angels, and in I Thess 5:9 "For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ."

It is clear from these passages that God did not create Hell for us,(though we could certainly end up there), but for the devil. Yes, God is ultimately sovereign and does in fact choose us, but the only way you can have any assurance that you have been chosen by Him is if your life reflects evidence that you have indeed been "born from above" in the way that you live your life in His presence, and by your willingness to turn from sin in all it's various forms and fascinations.

Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we go to the Gentiles." Acts 13:46

It's an easy cop-out to dismiss the message of Christ and the cost of discipleship when we can say in our heart, "Well, I'm probably not chosen anyway...so what can I do?" But it is clear from this passage that if we end up in hell, it not because God sent us there, but because we judge ourselves unworthy of everlasting life.

Some people don't like to face the reality that we have choices to make that are of eternal consequence and are willing to eat whatever they are fed rather than to study the scriptures for themselves to know the truth. With so much at stake, that's a foolish decision to make, is it not?
