Thoughts on what mealtime represents for families

At least one meal a day should be spent together as a family. Dinnertime has been the traditional time for families to get together to eat, and catch up on each other's lives. With meetings and activities for family members to attend, mealtime has become a three-ring circus of activity.

Getting everyone together several days a week for a meal is a good thing to aspire to. With families becoming more non- traditional, it is still a well-meaning way for a family of any type, whether it is a mom and her kids, or the traditional family or even for an older married couple to come together as a family.

Sitting down at a meal together even if that means eating at a restaurant is still a shared experience. It is a time for families to get together and see each other and reconnect. It is a time for everyone to tell what happened during their day, and to build on the connection they have .It brings a family together, both physically and mentally, so that they stay a family unit.

By connecting, problems can be found, and everyone can work together to bring a resolution to that problem. If one of the children is being bothered by another child at school this would be a relaxing time to find out, and let that child talk about what is going on, while her parents can pay attention, and give the child supporting advice.

Having a meal together keeps a bond going in the family, so that every member of the family feels they are apart of that family. Kids need to feel apart of a group and this is the perfect way to let them know they are loved. By letting kids know they are loved, this lets the child know he or she is not alone, and that they have a sort of force-field around them guiding them through life.

By eating a meal together, this lets children know that there is some structure to their lives. This is very important in today's world with family units falling apart. Every child needs structure, and just by eating one meal together every day, helps not only the kids, but the parents as well. It is a proven fact that eating dinner together as a family helps keep kids out of trouble. They aren't out on the streets getting into trouble, they are at home eating with their family who loves them and will help them through anything.

Mealtime is a way for a family to stay a family. It is time to relax and let down your guard and for everyone to know that they are part of something that is a loving unit. Mealtime is a traditional way for non-traditional families to become families and for everyone to eat a good meal and have memories that will last a lifetime.
