Summer family fun: Start planning now

a three-hour drive into four or five hours more than having to make repeat stops at convenience stores or gas stations for food. Make sure to pack a small cooler with a few drinks, and bring plenty of snacks to help quell any hunger pains during the ride. Not only will you save time - you'll also save money.

3. Plan a list of activities to choose from, and don't schedule them.

This is the most critical item - because it provides enough flexibility for you to change your mind once you are on vacation and realize that a certain activity would work out better on a particular day. Aside from activities such as theater shows or certain restaurants where you need to make reservations - try to stay away from scheduling strict times for any activity.

4. Do only one or two activities a day.

You will certainly have to lightly plan ahead of time the activities you want to do on certain days - but it's important to only plan on doing one or two. This way, when one activity turns out to take an entire day, while you had expected it to take only a few hours - you will be able to relax and enjoy it anyway, instead of nagging the family to rush through it so that you can make it to the next thing on the list. If the activities take less time than expected - then you're ahead of the game! Simply select from your list of activities and go do it!

The most important thing to keep in mind during a vacation is that they do not really take a whole lot of planning, but they do require that you research the area you will be vacationing so that you can accumulate a long list of fun activities that you and the family can choose from when you're there.

Whether you are organizing a camping trip, a theme park trip, or a trip to the city - it is important to remember that a vacation isn't just another item to be scribbled into your schedule book. It is supposed to be a way for you to put your schedule book away, and escape from the responsibilities and obligations of your daily life, even if only for a very brief period of time.
