The two most important things to remember when buying clothes are:
1) Find the size that fits you best in your largest areas
2) Have your clothes tailored
The biggest mistake I see as a seamstress for a major department store is women trying to fit their smallest parts and asking to have the areas of their clothes that are too tight let out (which is rarely possible unless there is enough material left in the seams or if it is tailored clothing, i.e. mens suiting). My suggestion is if you are between two sizes, go for the larger size, and have it tailored to fit your body perfectly. There are a few department stores that offer tailoring on merchandise that is purchased at their stores (for example, Von Maur, Macy's, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdales) or you can find an independent tailor. You will have to pay for alterations but it is well worth the money. Whether the item is expensive or inexpensive, if it is well tailored and fits you properly, you will look like a million bucks! On the flip-side, whether it's expensive or inexpensive, if it is ill-fitting it will look terrible and cheap.
Something else to consider when buying clothes is dressing for your body shape. There are certain styles that flatter some body shapes over others.
1) Pear-shapes (small on top, round on bottom):
-Try dresses that are fitted on top and have an A-line skirt that hits at the knee
-For pants, wear straight-leg or boot cut, but no skinny pants (they'll make you look like an ice cream cone).
-Shirts should be fitted but not too tight (which will make you look disproportionate) or too baggy (which will make you look wide all over). Try a bright colored top with darker or neutral tone pants or skirts to draw attention to your upper-half.
2) Apple-shapes (round in the middle)
-Structured garments are best for this body shape.
-Pants should be wide-leg or slightly flared to balance out your mid-section.
-Many people believe that wearing flowy or loose tops will camouflage the stomach, but this actually makes you look heavier. It is better to wear a top made with a heavier material that has a tailored look, and it is also important to create a defined waist since you do not have one. Examples: wrap tops, belted tops, tops with a waist seam
-Chiffon, silk and satin: can be flattering if worn properly. Must not be too billowy or loose. On the other hand, should not be tight. It is best if they are belted or fitted. The proper bra is a MUST under a light-weight fabric (get fitted!).
-Dresses

One may think that finding clothes that fit is a piece of cake at a retail store. Sometimes it may be and sometimes it won't.
