Movie reviews: Karla

In the late 1980's Karla Homolka met Paul Bernado, there relationship was unusual from the offset; on the night they met they ended up having sex while there two best friends had no choice other than to watch. Karla was a fairly nave girl out looking for love and Paul was the man of her dreams. For some considerable time while they dated all went well, but Paul's sexual interests were far stronger and more daring than Karla's.

One Christmas after much pestering Paul convinced Karla to let him have sex with her younger sister as he had always wanted to have sex with a virgin. Knowing that Karla's sister Tammy would not simply go along with the situation the pair conspired to drug her. They were convinced that all had gone well, Paul had sex with Tammy and it seemed like she would never know; but things never went to plan and due to a complication with the drugs they gave her Tammy died shortly after.

What had begun with a simple sexual fetish turned into a series of rapes; but when rape was not enough the obsession turns to murder.
Karla is based on true events from the words of Karla Homolka.

That 70's show star Laura Prepon looked for a gutsy role in contrast to her role on the show; so when she was approached by the producers of the movie Karla to play the lead role she felt it was an offer too good to be true. Unfortunately for Prepon, although the idea of the movie was a good one turning it from paper to film was not such a good idea.

If only the budget for this movie had been marginally higher it had the potential to be as big as Monster. However in the format it was released in it comes across as just a nasty TV movie with nudity and swearing. In fact I'd go as far as to say that the movie looks like the sort of thing that would appeal to the brown mac brigade who get off on rape and sexual degradation; that's certainly the view I have of its film makers.

While Prepon turns out a totally convincing role as Karla, she is let down by the quality of the film used and the awful Misha Collins (24, CSI) and his acting. Although I appreciate that Paul Bernado is a rather disturbing and wooden character; Collins comes in with far too much wood! In fact everytime you see
