Our children come across a lot of important things in their lives. Some of them they realize at the time and some of them they don't. As parents we are to show them the things that have worth and are important. Dr. Seuss' books definitely fall into that category. They have worth, teach our children, and help develop a love of reading and learning.
Worth.
Dr. Seuss was a brilliant author. He took his words and illustrations and created books that would live long after he passed. There are books for each stage of a child's life from babyhood to college. Many of his books were pure fun, but they provided something that no other author has achieved. They provided depth, fun, excitement, and joy into each and every page.
Teaching Our Children.
It is true that there are lots of books to read. Some have heavily ingrained theories, lessons, and moral values. Others are fun stories full of adventure and joy. Some of Dr. Seuss' books are pure fun. Others are much more then that. They teach our children lessons, as well as providing them with an adventure, and fun. Dr. Seuss had a way of showing the world as a wonderful place to learn, to play, to enjoy life, all while teaching lessons.
For example, in one of my favorite stories, "The Lorax" we are taught about cause and effect. Greed over took the land, all the trees were cut down, and even with the warnings of the Lorax the land was destroyed. This is no different then in our own world where we can destroy everything if we put our minds to a product or a dream and not to what we are doing to the land around us.
Love of Reading and Learning.
Of course Dr. Seuss didn't stop there. Instead he created land after land, adventure after adventure, and new creature after new creature. His books are so much fun to read, the first time and the hundred and first time. He has given us books that spark excitement in our children. He has given us books that cause a child to love to read, and to want to read more. He has sparked love of reading and of learning in children for years.
As parents we should take his books into our homes. Schools should have them all. We should realize their worth and value. It is also a great practice to send off students to college with "Oh, the Places You Will Go!" This book is a great one to read when down or feeling frustrated. After all, we all hit the bad places some time or another. In the end, we can indeed go farther then that!
