It is the age old question, it has risen from the dawn of man and it has followed us throughout the centuries. There have been many a debate about it and god knows I'm sick of hearing about it. The answers seems so simple to me, so obvious, but apparently there's more to this matter that meets the eye. Marijuana: legal or not? What are your thoughts? How much do you really know, how much do you think you know? Open your mind for the next few minutes and let me tell you what I think, what I know for a fact, and maybe (with a little help from my friends) we'll see the day the good green sits behind our convenient store counters, next to your cigs and naughty magazines. Through prior knowledge and a bit of old fashioned research I have found several interesting arguments that will prove to you that the legalization of marijuana will change our country...for the better. I have concluded that should marijuana become legal, the US will find several more billions of dollars in its treasury, the "gateway" theory will be completely put to shame, and how it can be appropriately used for therapeutic purposes.
In 2000, 734,498 people were arrested in the United States alone charged of marijuana violations - 88% of these good-fellow American brothers and sisters of ours were arrested AND incarcerated for simple possession. Based upon current statistics from the National Institution on Drug Abuse indicated that one marijuana smoker is arrested every 45 seconds in the US. These numbers far exceed the number of arrests for more REAL crimes, such as rape, murder, manslaughter, robbery, and aggravated assault. Prohibition is ineffective and expensive, haven't we learned anything from trying to prohibit alcohol? The government is wasting not only our time, but our money as well. It is we who pay for these senseless convictions, "Taxpayers are forced to pay billions of dollars to persecute, prosecute, and incarcerate people for having marijuana." There is another way! Educating people about the drug and regulating the sale and use of it. Once legal, not only would the country benefit from the sales of marijuana but from tax revenues as well AND there will be less money wasted in the prison system. As Serj Tankien shouts in hopes the masses will hear him, "Minor drug offenders fill your prisons, you don't even flinch. Taxes paying for the wars against the Neuvo-riche"
So, we've established that through legalizing marijuana we could put some much needed money into our countries
