Reflections on real life heroes

Real life heroes come in many shapes and forms. They come from all walks of life. A hero isn't just a person who bravely dares to face danger in order to save someone else's life. A hero is a person who keeps on going through life, despite all the pain, tribulations, and negative experiences, struggling to survive just one more day. My greatest heroes and heroine are my own children, and people who are like them.

I have three children, aged 34, 31, and 27. Each of them is a special hero in their own way, for their own reason. To me, they are heroes and heroines because they have been through so much, yet still continue to love others. Many other people I have met who have had similar experiences in life are filled with hate and bitterness. Many others have chosen death instead of life when faced with these hardships. My children chose life and love, not only for themselves, but for others as well. Despite being physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, and for two of them, sexually abused as well, my children worked to overcome their own struggles with depression, social anxiety, and other health problems. Moreover, they reached out to other people who needed assistance in improving their lives too.

Due to my children's selflessness and capacity for love, our family was able to take in over three hundred homeless teenagers in just a seven-year time period. My children chose to go without luxuries and conveniences, such as a family car, new clothes, and personal hobby items in order for us to be able to provide a home to teenagers that had been abandoned or rejected by society. My daughter taught one homeless man how to read, while my sons taught him how to write better and how to do simple math. They helped adults and teenagers with drug and alcohol addictions to deal with their addictions, as well as have fought their own addictions.

My oldest son took in the father who abused him so badly, and lovingly cared for him during his last few months of life. At the same time, my oldest son was serving his second tour of duty over in Iraq for the Army, dealing with getting divorced from his second wife and obtaining custody of their daughters, due to his wife's neglecting the children and almost losing them to the Child Protective Agency. To top it all off, he also was having to get custody of his daughter from a previous marriage, because that ex-wife went back to using drugs. He is currently attempting to raise his daughters as a single parent, and has just been
