Top 10 simple ways to be green

In the Universal Consciousness, the call to save the earth has been gaining momentum since the first bit of pollution spewed out of the Machine Age. Now many years later, injury, insult, and desecration have been heaped upon the earth until we no longer have a choice in the matter. We must become green or watch as the earth is destroyed.  Simple ways to green up start right in your own home.   Remember that the little things count for everything.

1) Turn the lights off when they're not being used. Take a look right now; maybe you'll see a light or two that could be shut off. Or should be shut off.

2) Turn the heat down when no one is home. Don't turn it off, just lower it a couple of degrees, or even five degrees.

3) Change your light bulbs to the twisty ones rather than the traditional global ones. Energy efficient light bulbs will not only help save the environment, you'll notice that they save energy and therefore money on your utility bill.

4) Stop wasting water and energy at the same time. Don't let the water run while you brush your teeth. The pumping system that sends the water is the energy source.

5) Don't leave the refrigerator door open while you're thinking about it. Rationally plan out your snack foraging before approaching the kitchen. Sandwich, leftovers, cookie? Make a snack plan and stick to it.

6) Walk once in a while.  Country, city, or rural doesn't really matter. A green seeker can always find walking choices. Start small, a walk to the post office, grocery store, neighbor's house, or just a walk.

7) Dispose of garbage properly, in recycle bins when provided. It doesn't have to be a religion, just a habit. Don't throw it out the car window. If your garbage pickup provides separate bins, start using them.

8) Separate papers from other garbage. Most of the paper products we throw away can be made into more paper. It's a double whammy; you get to save a tree while you're classifying your garbage.

9) Think green a little bit. Congratulate yourself on separating the newspapers and garbage. Then buy yourself some twisty bulbs. More congratulations to you.

10) Then let that greenness grow into a life of its own and get political about it. If you know about a source of pollution, complain about it, long and bitterly. Call the EPA.  Write the editor. Call or email your senators and representatives. And vote green too. Make those bastard lawmakers find alternative energy forms. Join a green group, or start one, or donate some money. Every action makes a difference. And plant trees, everywhere and often.
