How I relax: My favorite hobbies

by JL Francis

Created on: March 06, 2008

Relaxation is vital to recharging ourselves and facing the struggles and demands of life. The opportunities to relax are endless. But, finding the time may be the problem. To decompress most people carefully plan getaways either for the weekend or for a longer period of time. When getting away is not an option we turn to some other form of relaxation.

As much as I like the idea of spontaneity, most things in my life are planned. Otherwise, I end up doing a bit of everything and little gets done in the end. To relax I indulge in shopping, writing poetry and photography. Recently, I've inducted a new pastime, scrapbooking. It combines my passion for photography and telling stories.

I've been scrapbooking for about two years now. But unofficially, I've been scrapbooking since I was in high school which is more the 15 years ago. This is now one of my favorite hobbies because I can add the photos from my experiences to something concrete. In our digital world I have very few photo albums. Most of my pictures are stored online. When I scrapbook I escape into the experiences that come through from the pictures. It's like reliving a favorite memory all over again.

I initially started scrapbooking as an idea for my sister's anniversary. The book chronicled her years with her husband. I took them out to dinner the week of their anniversary and
presented them with the book. My sister loved it. But, what I was surprised to find was my brother-in-law was really impressed. He appreciated how I incorporated his interests in basketball, movies, and playing pool into the pages.

I enjoy scrapbooking. Finding the time to do it consistently is the challenge. I usually try to scrapbook in the evening after work for about an hour as way to wind down in the evening.

Are you interested in scrapbooking or want to buy a gift for someone you know who already does? Well, check out my favorites list of scrapbooking stores and websites for cool tips!

In order to supply my scrapbook cravings I shop at A.C. Moore and Joann stores. A.C. Moore has really great deals and huge store savings from 40% or 50% off regularly priced items. Also, keep a look out for scrapbooking sales on QVC.

Creating Keepsakes is a scrapbooking magazine that has an informative website that is chock full of scrapbooking ideas and teaching videos. Check out DIY crafts and Memory Makers online for more scrapbooking tips.

What supplies are needed to get started with scrapbooking? After two years, I haven't found it necessary to invest in too many scrapbooking machines like the Cricut. I've kept it basic and in my scrapbooking space you'll find:

Albums (which come in an assortment of colors and sizes)
Paper (cardstock, vellum, mulberry)
Sharp pair of scissors (I also have a paper cutter)
Acid free adhesive (works well with cardstock and photos)
Journaling pens (purchase on with a fine and wide tip on opposite ends)
Embellishments (stickers, rub-on stamps, buttons, ribbons)

Hobbies are the key to balancing your life and making room for the things you enjoy. If you don't have a hobby, try your hand at different things. You'll be surprised at what you learn about yourself and feel good in the process.
