This is definitely a man's movie. A lot of T and A, a little lesbian love and even a good girl fight scene with some trash talking. But it also teaches some lessons. One, is that your co-workers are not always your friends. Two, family will mess over faster than strangers will. And three, "never trust anyone's information but your own".
I liked the lead character because she was able to keep her work and home life separate and she actually was using her job to go to school. Well, at least until her cousin came to stay with her. She had to call around just to see where her cousin had been the night before. Her cousin was hanging with the stripper that got her drunk and took advantage of her just to make some extra money on the side. But when her cousin slept with her boyfriend after she was followed home by one of her adoring fans, that's when it got messy. She was no joke with the pistol. Like father, Like daughter. There was even a little love story between her and the DJ at the club.
I also liked the fact that you had more than just the lead character's story going on.
You had the club owner ducking and dodging this guy who he owed money to. You had the two characters that were sent by the guy he owed money to watch and see if the club owner would show up. You had the two older strippers causing trouble for the main character and got her cousin raped and beat up. As a director, Ice Cube did a good job with keeping the plot and sub-plots interesting.
All the characters were really entertaining and funny. Ice Cube did a really good job putting together the cast and they all seemed to work well together. They took actors from different genres and generations and made it work seamlessly. you even had the father from "Good Times" in this movie. And to have an unknown actress as the lead and be able to hold her own was impressive.
Hands down, this is one of my favorite movies. Not because its Oscar material, but because its a movie that keeps you involved and entertained. It was a movie that was very well put together. The cast was excellent. If you haven't seen this movie, I would say that you should.
