From my maternal grandfather I learned to plant and harvest a garden by the signs, when the fish would be biting and how to carry a rifle when hunting. His patience was without end as he showed me by example how to do things in his world.
My paternal grandfather taught me the joy of sitting on a bench and watching birds. He also taught me the importance of taking care of your health from an early age.
My maternal grandmother taught me to sew on her treadle sewing machine. She taught me to cut, piece and quilt, how to crochet and how to can the bounty from the garden. From her I also learned to build a fire in a cook stove and how to cook on it.
Knitting and the art of writing letters, I learned from my paternal grandmother. She also taught me the importance of staying in touch through letter with family members that lived far away. I also learned the joy of a child who receives totally unexpected little packages in the mail from her.
Could I have learned all of these things on my own? Yes, I could have. However, how many mistakes might I have made and how many hours would it have taken me to track down all they taught me? Where would I have found the love they showered on me as they taught me? What could replace the sweet, sweet memories I have of learning from my parents and grandparents? Nothing, nothing at all.
