Assessing popular sayings about friendship

Words of wisdom on the subject of friendship abound in popular sayings that reveal there are so many facets to the relationships we build during our lives. Friendship is an integral part of life giving us the opportunity to forge bonds that can see us through bad times and share our joys.

Popular friendship quotes can say so much in so few words and tell a story of the value that genuine friendship can bring to our lives. So much has been said on the subject of friendship that reminds us to cherish the friendships we already have and to keep making new friends.

The Greek philosopher Aristotle said "misfortune shows those who are not really friends." This quote from Aristotle looks at friendship from a different angle, indicating that real friends are identified by their response and reaction to troublesome times. When misfortune strikes, this is the time when we need people we can rely on to assist us in either resolving or coping with the situation.
Aristotle suggests that not all friends will prove to be loyal when difficulties arise, perhaps abandoning us when things go badly for us. Fair-weather friends will disappear when stormy weather hits our lives and will separate them from those who are true and loyal companions.

The following pearl from the pages of the bible portrays friendship as long-lasting relationship that will exist regardless of the circumstances we face in life. "A true companion is loving all the time, and is a brother that is born for when there is distress". Proverbs 17:17

Even when there is disagreement, the affection between true companions will allow them to resolve and overcome them on the basis of love. The bible proverb depicts a true friend as " a brother" that will come to our aid in times of distress. Some have referred to loyal and close friends as brothers or sisters who are not born to the same parents but who have the same closeness. The real test of friendship comes when there are times of trouble and the response will often display the depth of the bond that exists.

Abraham Lincoln commented that "the better part of one's life consists of his friendships." This comment from a man who held the most powerful position in America, shows how important friendship is in a person's life. Of all the things we possess or achieve in life, nothing can compare to the loving and happy friendships we forge with one another. In times of joy and sadness, friends are there to share them with us.
It is of interest that Abraham Lincoln refers to friendship as "the better part" of life, taking precedence of things like wealth, fame, beauty or power. No doubt the words of a man who enjoyed the value of true friendship until his untimely death.

Friendship is a means to establish relationships that can last a lifetime and these popular sayings are just a few examples that remind us of the value of these treasured unions.
