The loud screech of your latest ring tone download is guaranteed to disturb the tranquil silence, startle many an engrossed reader and draw the attention of the librarian. If you wish to take this annoyance tactic a step further, feel free to answer your mobile and chatter away as loudly as you are comfortable with, but please bear in mind that this simple offence could get you escorted off the premises, a consequence that will seriously ruin your ability to instigate pranks in the future. A simple means of irritating your fellow patrons, whatever your age or status, is to tap your fingers on the desk, shelf or, even better, on a book. This is often done subconsciously by the serious patron who is deeply involved in his reading matter and completely unaware of the movement or sound created by his hand. If you are choosing this as your ammunition to irritate others, you might want to practise your concentration face'; pretending you are engrossed in your book will help you avoid the looks of annoyance for longer and will also allow you to focus on something else when you are about to laugh at the results of your actions. In order to create maximum annoyance here, tap your fingers in the tune of a song that will stick in the patrons' minds long after they have left the library. Have you heard the tune "I know a song that will get on your nerves"? I think we have a winner.
Thus far, the annoyance tactics discussed have been of such a nature that one can plead ignorance when engaged in them. The following techniques, however, are a little more extreme and may require some preparation and awareness of others. It's easy to imagine a library overcome by stillness and calm. During a moment of complete silence, when all the patrons around you are absorbed in their respective books, drop a large book, preferably from the reference section, on to the floor. This should be done in a calculated and purposeful manner. The more determined and forceful your drop is, the louder the bang and the louder the bang, the more people you will have the pleasure of seeing jump out of their seats in surprise.
