Everyone wants to save money, yet somehow the majority of us find it difficult to do so. Mostly because everything is so very expensive and there are so many tempting things to buy. Also most of us have disposable incomes, and earn more money than people used to meaning that we have more flexible money to spend.
1. Write a list before you go shopping and stick to it like glue. If you have a list you won't be tempted by anything else that catches your eye while out shopping, because you'll be thinking that you really don't need that. Make a list even if you are only going out shopping for three items, it will ensure you stay on target and don't forget what you really went out to buy.
2. Shop around for items if you have the time. You may be able to find the same item somewhere else for a lower price. The extra walking will do you good too!
3. Think carefully before you buy something. Do you really need that DVD, jumper or chocolate bar? If you have trouble deciding, go home and think it over. If you still want to buy it the next day then head out to get it, though mostly you'll find that you'll forget about it once you get home if it wasn't that necessary.
4. Have something to eat and drink before you go out to save you buying food and drink while you are out. Take something with you to snack on if you're heading out for a long time and take a bottle of water with you. You'll feel more refreshed and be able to concentrate on what you are buying without pondering where the next shop is that contains chocolate and coke cola.
5. Make lunches to take to work with you rather than spending money on sandwiches when you get there. Making lunch at home is a lot cheaper than buying sarnies from the sandwich van or grabbing a bag of chips for the chip shop, and in most cases a lot healthier too.
6. Get rid of your credit cards. If you don't have them you won't use them, and you won't be able to run up the colossal bill that comes with overspending on them. Try budgeting instead and think carefully about each purchase. If you have to save up to afford something you'll find yourself evaluating just how much you need the item in question.
7. Cut down on frivolous spending, such as buying take out every night or buying the latest DVD as soon as it comes out. Think carefully about what you need to spend your money on and save the rest. Instead of ordering a Chinese take away you could buy a new pair of jeans or add an extra lump of money to a holiday fund.
The key thing to remember when trying to save money is to think about what you need, what you would like and what might be nice to have. Think about just how desperately you need each item you buy and plan out lists before shopping. As long as you take care with what you spend, you should find that you end up saving a great amount of money that would otherwise have been wasted. Think carefully and spend wisely.
