How to win your fantasy football league

Improve Your Fantasy Football Life Today!

Fantasy sports in general and Fantasy Football (abbreviated "FF" going forward) in particular are growing at an exponential rate. And, in this, as in all things, it is always more enjoyable to win and prosper than not, whether it be for pride, prestige, notoriety or money. Although it is always impossible to predict and anticipate all of the vagaries of luck, good and bad, there are a few straightforward concepts that you can apply every season to improve your experiences.

CONSISTENCY: This characteristic should be at the heart of all of your FF strategy in that you are looking for players that perform more consistently than not on a regular basis every week, leading to your FF team doing the same, leading to your team having a better than average record, with good points totals every week, leading to your team making your FF playoffs with the chance for titles and monies. Variance may be of some attraction in relationships or jobs, it is of no value in FF: you want a Running Back ("RB"), Wide Receiver ("WR") and Quarterback ("QB") that scores 15-25 points every week, not one that scores 30 one week and five the next. Likewise, your team total will be a sum of 8-12 individual player totals; if the bulk of them score consistently, including your Tight End ("TE"), Kicker ("K") and Team Defense ("DEF"), you will be able to withstand an occasional disappearance by one of your key players and still have a chance to win that week's game.

PLAYER EVALUATION: In particular at your FF Draft - a simple formula can crystallize this for you: A player's value is a combination of their Performance x Position (taken in draft) x Probability (of injury) - three simple, but challenging to execute P's.

Performance: Of course you want all of your players to perform well, but in the early rounds of the draft - 1st through 5th, you also have to consider not taking on too much risk (comparing this to reward potential) of injury. In general, the most valuable players are those that score well consistently (see above) and that score and contribute in a variety of ways, for example, a RB that is the bulk of their team's offense, carrying the ball and catching passes with the potential for touchdowns both rushing and receiving.

Position: As you grow in proficiency, you will learn exactly what this means - the draft is akin to a 3 hour poker game with one single hand being played. The same player that is a great pick with the 8th selection would be
