When rock legends sell out

Earlier this year i had a dream that I had obtained a bunch of really neat Elton John shirts, accessorites, posters, records and other flawless merchenise. I had it all spread out on a table and Elton himself was graciously authographing everything. Each individual item had his signature accompanied by a little note saying how much he loved me too. I knew I had to have been dreaming, so I avoided pinching myself in case I really was. Then I saw him enter a room wearing dark sunglasses and an oversized black suit with gold trim. Two younger black guys stood beside him as cameras flashed and he announced into microphones the launch of his new rap career. I looked down at my now useless EJ memorabilia and asked God in heaven why he hated me so... And then I woke up, relieved that it was only a dream.

Or was it?

I heard the rumors. Then this here innnernet confirmed that the Rocket Man indeed was contemplating dabbling into the rap music. He was quoted saying that he enjoyed hip hop beats and wanted to somehow incorporate them into his own music. He spoke of working with Dr. Dre and others. I'm not a fan of rap, but my life long admiration prohibits me from typing anything rude.

Despite my initial disapointment, I have attempted to open up my mind a little bit. I have heard which ever Tupac song that was that had Elton mixed in it. And that thing he did with Emminem wasn't all bad. Plus, part of what makes Elton's music so unique is it's ability to adapt wonderfully to different genres other than pop. "Madman Accross The Water" is an excellent rock ballad. "Your Sister Can't Twist" sounds totally like that old bebop stuff. "Sixty Years On" and "The King Must Die" make me feel classier just listening to them. "Jack Rabbit" and "Texan Love Song" would make any redneck tap their toe. "Border Song" is totally gospel. And even "Jamaica Jerkoff" makes me wanna frolic nude on a beach and bang on a drum. Elton's just a genious like that. So perhaps this hip hop hibbidy jibbidy isn't that weird after all....?

Sir Elton's image and music have touched my life ever since the beginning of it and nothing will change that. Beneath the legendary glitz, he's only a mere human just like me. I don't have to love everything he does to still love him no matter what. So if this doesn't just stay a bad dream, so be it. If Elton John wants to do the unthinkable and make rap music, then I am -as the kids would say- "down with that".
