Being green is a lifestyle, and whenever you're looking to make a change in your lifestyle you have to do it in small steps and give it time to take hold. What is simple for one person may be a huge inconvenience for another. So when it comes to simple ways to be green, it's really a matter of finding what green routines fit best into your lifestyle.

Below are ten green ideas, many of which only have to be done once. Choose one idea which seems simple for you and do it. Once the new routine has become part of your lifestyle, try adding another.

1. Pass on, donate or sell unwanted clothing, furniture, toys and household items to keep them out of landfills. Adding this routine 1-4 times per year will remove clutter from your home, help others, and help the environment.

2. Take advantage of county recycling programs. Newspaper, cardboard, glass, cans and plastics can be recycled curbside or taken to local recycling centers. In addition paint, automotive fluids, hazardous chemicals, batteries, light bulbs, electronics, etc. are part of county hazardous waste recycling programs. Check your county website to find out where to bring your recyclables. Not only does recycling waste keep it out of landfills, but it also helps protect our water, air and soil.

3. Use retailers' recycling programs. Bring grocery bags, egg cartons and foam trays back to the grocery store, empty ink and toner cartridges back to the office supply store, wire coat hangers back to the dry cleaner, and film canisters back to the photo shop. There's something empowering about bringing your garbage back to the store that sold it to you!

4. Ensure you have low water flow plumbing fixtures to conserve water. If you're not sure if your faucets and shower heads already have low-flow fixtures, contact your local Water Management District to receive a flow bag. If your water flow is too high, replace your shower heads and faucet aerators. If you don't have a low flow toilet or the funds to buy one, add a brick or half gallon container filled with water to the tank. This displaces some water which requires less water to fill the tank. When it's time to replace your dishwasher or washing machine, be sure to replace them with Energy Star rated appliances to save both water and electricity.

5. Use a rain gauge and a timer on your irrigation system, and irrigate only when necessary. Over watering is a prescription for weeds and disease, so by watering less you'll not only save water, but reduce the need for herbicides.
