How staring at a computer all day can affect your eyes

Close to 150 million people sit in front of a computer monitor each day. I am one of them and you may be too. Many of us spend in excess of two hours at a time, focusing on screens as we complete work projects, blog, or just surf the web. If a significant portion of your day involves computer time, you may be at risk for CVA-Computer Vision Syndrome.

What is Computer Vision Syndrome?

According to the American Optometric Association, CVS is a set of symptoms that are all related to working with a computer terminal. These symptoms can affect both the eyes and musculoskeletal parts of the body. Very simply, CVS occurs when an individual overtaxes the human eye whiling asking it to perform in prolonged situations that it was not designed to do.

What If I'm Skeptical of the Reality of CVS?

At first I chalked it up to getting older and shrugged of my symptoms. When I finally did my research, I was amazed to find that many of my same concerns were common to other computer workers.

I first began noticing that my eyes would sting and burn after an hour or so on my computer. If I persisted at my task, they would begin to water profusely until it was difficult to see. I compensated by taking 15-20 minute breaks from my work. A few months later I was annoyed to find that I was unable to focus on distance points after spending even half-an-hour staring at my terminal. The blurred vision would last for as much as 30-45 minutes before clearing. I began to imagine myself slowly losing my vision and worried as I noticed my symptoms worsening over time. I was immensely relieved to discover, through my own inquiries, that I was probably suffering from Computer Vision syndrome.

What Are the Visual Symptoms of Someone Who Suffers With CVS? (Keep in the mind that these symptoms are generally experienced after prolonged periods of computer work or, over time, due to progressive eye strain associated with CVS).

1. Blurred Vision when looking into the distance
2. Double Vision
3. Stinging of the
