Essays: Nighttime explored

bust open the legislative dungeon of nighttime and dust was really bad: bad enough to finally provide Lina a voice in the darkness.

In Visible, it was rude for a woman to publicly request seconds. Lina really wanted another cup of coffee to celebrate departures and beginnings. With the fire of future surging through her tattered old bra, Lina spoke aloud for the first time in years.

"Excuse me, please excuse me. May I, could I please, would it be all right. No, sorry. It's nothing, sorry." Although Lina's eyes had not made contact with the waiter, her head was now lower than humanly possible.

Jumping from her moment of spotlight and back into darkness, Vinette clasped her friend around the shoulders (one of which was dislocated, again). Desperately, Vinette cried out to her, "Lina you are a woman in Visible and the nighttime is lifting. You have four years before I employ you as my receptionist and that means you must practice being of the light. Ask him again for what you want!"

With the strength of all the Saints in Heaven, Lina lifted her little head, looked her father in the eye, and said, "May I have another cup of coffee before I leave please?"

Coffee was not forthcoming. Instead, the nighttime surged forward and the nocturnal creatures growled farewell to those of the light.

Seated in the light bus of perpetual forward motion, the two girls watched happily as the last signs of leaving in Visible faded into darkness. Vinette smiled at Lina.

"We are no longer in Visible," she offered gaily.

"No longer in Visible", muttered Lina quietly.

Oh, but there was a long way to go: Nighttime explored was way too scary for most people, especially for Lina.
