How do you define a successful child? What does it mean to be successful? Can someone be successful even if they are living on government aid?
Before considering how to raise successful children, you have to decide your goals for your children. Is it to be a CEO? Is it to be an Olympic gold medal winner? Is it to be a doctor or a lawyer? Is it to have strong morals? Is it to be a devout Christian? Is it to be happy? Is it to have a positive attitude and be considerate of other people?
Everyone defines success differently and has different goals for their children. Everyone has their only beliefs about what makes for good parenting, and everyone has their own personal style. Adjusting this style according to your goals for your children will provide the best odds for them becoming the type of successful child you are looking for.
If your goal is for your child to be a CEO you want to raise a strong leader. Model a strong approach to decision making. Help your child become a leader by being one yourself. Teach your child how to fight his own battles.
If you are hoping for an Olympic athlete you first need to be realistic. Does your child possess the basic talents necessary for a good athlete, such as great coordination and speed? If your child is born with the fundamentals necessary to be a great athlete, training cannot start too soon. Play sports with your child as soon as he can walk. Have your child work with the best trainers in the best facilities. Emphasize good nutrition, and a can-do spirit. Above all, teach your child that he needs to work hard and long to reach your goals.
If you want your child to be a good doctor or lawyer, emphasize the importance of education. Read to your child from birth, and send him to the best schools. Model the importance of being an intelligent, educated person. Tell your child that school is important and they must always try their best.
If you believe success is about doing what is right, and being considerate of other people, then you must model these behaviors on a consistent basis. Don't tell your child to be considerate of other and then talk badly about people behind their back. Help others, and treat them with respect. Support your children in their goals and not yours. Live by the morals you preach. Perhaps most importantly, treat your child with respect and consideration.
Being successful means different things to different people. Your parenting style needs to reflect your vision of success. This will give you the best odds of having your children grow up to be the kind of person you want.
