Product reviews: Estroven, a natural alternative treatment for menopause

Over-The-Count Remedy May Be Better Than Prescription

As women become more aware of the devastating effects of estrogen, they look for alternatives to help them get through that period of time when their body is turning away from childbirth. Some are still asking for prescription medicine from their doctors. In many cases, the doctor is putting the patient on a low dose of an antidepressant to help with the mood swings and hot flashes.

There isn't a doctor any place in the U.S. who would write a prescription of estrogen for me. In addition to my family history showing cancer, I have a physical disability that prevents me from taking many of the prescriptions other people can take. When I reached the point where I knew I was experiencing menopausal symptoms, I made an appointment to see my doctor, hoping that there were new drugs available that I would be eligible to take. The only thing the doctor could prescribe for me was a generic antidepressant. I had tried other antidepressants in the past for General Anxiety Disorder only to discover that I was feeling more depressed than before. Using it for menopause turned out not to be any different. Instead of having the extreme ups and downs of my mood that accompany this time in my life, I was experiencing just the extreme down times. It did help a little with the hot flashes though. Instead of having four or five each day, the antidepressant had limited this to two or three times each day. Clearly, the antidepressant method for menopause wasn't the best for me.

I stopped taking the antidepressant and tried to just live with the effects that menopause was putting me through. I was coping with the "change of life" for the most part through yoga exercises when I saw that the local drug store was finally carrying Estroven. Unlike prescription medicine, Estroven takes longer to work because it's mostly herbs and vitamins. I didn't notice much difference until I had been taken it daily for six weeks. According to what it states on the box, it can take up to two months to feel the difference. Nevertheless, this over-the-counter supplement was what I needed to feel balanced, energized, focused, and yet able to sleep at night. Because of how severe my own personal symptoms have been, when the extra strength formula came to my local area, I bought that instead. I still have hot flashes but it's only about two times a week now. That's a far cry from the five times each day I had been experiencing before.

Estroven's main ingredients are soy isoflavones, standardized black cohosh, calcium and boron. It also contained the natural vitamins E, B-6, B-12, folic acid, and blends of calming and balancing herbs. I couldn't find one ingredient that could, in any way, hurt me.
