and "Guided Mindfulness Meditation" by Jon Kabat-Zinn. One of my personal favorites which I have used for many years is the Yoga Nidra Meditation CD: Extreme Relaxation of Conscious Deep Sleep. The purpose of yoga nidra meditation is to guide the mind into a state of deep sleep while remaining awake and alert.
Some people prefer narration only on their meditation tapes and CDs, while others like some background music. Be sure to check product reviews online to see which features a guided meditation product has before making your purchase.
Buy a Video Tape or DVD
Video meditation instruction is very popular, and is also a more economical way to learn how to meditate. I recommend Meditation for Beginners by Maritza. In this Gaiam DVD, French-born Maritza guides the beginner through some very light, basic yoga moves. She then guides the practitioner through a brief yoga nidra "body scan" which involves focusing the concentration on parts of the body. The next part of the program is the guided meditation.
Overall, I feel that Gaiam and Yoga Journal produce the best meditation tapes and DVDs. Yoga master Rodney Yee also has produced several tapes and DVDs about meditation, including "Relaxation and Breathing for Meditation," and "Rodney Yee: Meditation and Yoga."
Practice Yoga
One of the greatest problems new meditation practitioners face is that their bodies are tense and tight. The tautness of the body can become a major distraction to the mind. Yoga asanas were developed to release the ties that bind us so that we can sit more effectively and easily in meditation. I have found the Yoga Journal to be a very helpful and useful resource, as well as many tapes and DVDs. It's wise to purchase the tapes and DVDs which have been produced by the best teachers, such as Rodney Yee, Seane Corn and Shiva Rea.
No matter what type of meditation practice you choose, you should experience success if you practice regularly. Be sure to take at least a few minutes out of your busy schedule every day to meditate. Your mind will be calmer and you will experience a greater sense of personal well-being.
