Tips on choosing the right university

Selecting which university you would like to study at should be done with great consideration. Your decision will have effects on the rest of your life. After having been through this exact process myself within recent years, here are my top tips on how to choose the right university of you:

1. Decide Why You are Going to University

To enhance your future career:

If this is the case, then looking at leader boards would be a good place to start. These are available online, in national newspapers, among other places. Look for the highest regarded universities in your area of study. For example, Oxford may be the best place to go for a degree in Business, but the University of East Anglia is considered the best place to study Creative Writing.

To postpone work, due to uncertainty of what you want to do in life: This is much more common than you might think. There are people who want to get a well-paid job, but are unsure what they want to do. The best option then, perhaps, is choosing a degree you know you will enjoy. Not only will the degree hopefully help you get a good job, but you have time to work out what you want to do. If it happens that you realise you do not want a career to do with the degree you are studying for, then the simple fact that you have a degree should help you stand out and prove your academic worth, no matter what direction you choose to go in.

To have fun:
University is supposed to be an enjoyable time of your life. There are a lot of opportunities and experiences exclusive to university life. This probably shouldn't be the main reason for attending university, but decided the balance you would like between work and play will definitely have an effect on which university you choose. Things to consider are: how much work you are expected to do for your course, how active the student union is (this is a huge source of entertainment and student socialising), what the night life is like in the city or town...

2. Consider Location

Not only should the university itself be taken into great consideration, but where the university is situated is important too. You will be spending at least eight months per year living in or near your university, so it's important that you are happy with its location. Thing to think about are:

How far away from home you are: Some people prefer to get as far away as possible so they can truly experience independence from home life. Others prefer to stay nearer home so they can pop back and get their mum to do their laundry
